A New Take on Urban Power Grids

For the first time in human history, more people now live in urban areas than in the country; megacities with over 10 million inhabitants can now be found on every continent. However, increasing urbanization also gives rise to a tricky situation when it comes to energy supply: Higher demand but less space.
As a result, we are seeing more and more power stations and plants with highly compact designs, with some of these plants – like the district Oerlikon in Zurich, Switzerland – even being built underground. In projects like these, the aim is to use every single centimeter as efficiently as possible and adapt the components to the space available.

Thanks to its dry, plug-in connections, the CONNEX cable system is already extremely flexible. For the station in Oerlikon, we worked with our client to make it even more compact and literally took the system in a brand new direction: vertical instead of horizontal. The new CONNEX transformer connectors enable up to three cables to be connected at the same time in a vertical arrangement and in close proximity to one another. And of course, all our cable connections are enclosed and touch-proof, allowing maintenance staff to access even the tightest spot without needing to close off any areas.

At a glance

  • Highly compact design thanks to vertical connections for up to three cables
  • Flexible and easy to install thanks to plug connections that do not need oiling
  • Three separate type approvals (IEC 60840, IEC 62271-203, IEC 60137)
  • Tested at the factory, ready for use ex works
  • Enclosed design, touch-proof, allowing maintenance to be carried out without closing off the area
